There are some of us who dream of becoming a doctor, lawyer, or businessman someday. But what must we do in order to make those dreams a reality? Well for starters,we have to go to school to learn and study. After that, take an exam andgraduate. Lastly, give your application to the proper office and voila, you’rea doctor, lawyer, or businessman.

But nowadays,it’s not as simple as that. People aspiring to be a professional undergo aseries of levels in order to be called engineer, doctor, or attorney. The mostbasic level is called internship. Today, most courses require an internshipexperience to be completed in order to graduate. Personally, I believeinternships are not to be taken lightly. This is the first level yet veryimportant in building your future career. So here is a list of how to apply, prepare, and ace your internship in investment banks.

Phase 1: Preparing Your Application

There is actually not much of a difference if you apply for an internship in other countries. You just have to start applying for an internship by the end of your second semester during your third year if you are an undergraduate or during your first year if you are taking masters degree. I advise you to start earlywith your applications as companies’ responses may take a bit of time. Applying online is also as effective as trying to give your resume personally to numerous offices. Apply to as many companies as you can. You are not going to lose anything if you apply to each company you see on the internet.

Phase 2:Preparing for Interview

Let’s say you pass the screening and now eligible to have an interview with the boss of the company. Do not think that the interview phase will be easy. Speaking from experience, this is the hardest phase of the whole process. To talk with sense and confidence in front of a high-ranking official of the company is definitely nerve-wracking. If you want to pass with flying colors after an interview, you must do these three things: prepare, review, and practice. Prepare yourself before the interview. You have to summon every ounce of your confidence from your body and channel it. Do not be shy.Speak loudly and clearly. Think before you answer and try to avoid stuttering.I must say you have to review a few topics before you head out to an interviewwith an investment bank. Review topics from basic Finance such as derivatives. Also, basic Accounting and Mathematics of Investment. Lastly, prepare shortintroduction about yourself as this is must in every interview.

Phase 3:Preparing for Internship

Let us say again that you successfully pass your interview and your company finally decided to bring you on board as theirintern. There are requirements to be passed to the Human Resource department  of the company before you can start. Make sure you pass all the requirements before the deadline. Common requirements needed are medical clearance and proof of your enrollment to a university. After you secure all these, you can definitely celebrate now for being able to land an internship position. Once you are there, always be understanding towards everyone. Greet the janitor hesame way you greet the CEO. Do not expect that your boss will give you difficult tasks. Most probably they will give you the very basic ones first. You have to show always that you learn fast and at the same time, hard-working. Earn their respect so that they will trust you with in giving harder tasks andthey might consider to hire you after your internship. Lastly, smile. No one likes an intern who is sad or snobby. Optimism is the key.

I hope the above list will help you in securing aninternship position. Learn and enjoy the whole experience. Good luck!
